The best stories are those that, through a beautiful blending of words and phrases, can engage all of our senses as readers. The more senses that are stimulated, the more connected we feel. We not only relate to a story and its characters, but we are moved by them, as well.
The best songs? Well, they do the same thing! Music can convey a story or a moment in a way that makes us feel connected to it on a deep, visceral level. This is why the right song in the right moment can lift us up, or reduce us to a tearful, heartbroken mess.
Music and literature have long been intertwined. Songs have inspired authors and authors have inspired musicians, sometimes directly and sometimes thematically. We are, after all, both moved and driven by stories--they inspire us in a way that transcends our cultures and experiences. It seems that stories define our very nature; they connect us via a sort of "collective unconsciousness" (Joseph Campbell). So, it only makes sense that we can find connections between the stories we sing and the stories we read on the page.
As we begin considering pairings of literary and non-literary texts for our IO, it is important not only to consider and compare the merits and messages of texts in light of each other but also through the lens of greater global issues; we go beyond the "what does it say" and "what does it mean," and venture into the "Why does this matter?" We must also consider not only a single song in light of a novel, but also the style and voice of Cohn in comparison to Brontë's through an examination of his other work, as well.
Here, I have links to songs by Cohn to help you get a sense of not only of his works but his voice; you can begin to see that not only are the messages of Brontë's Jane Eyre connected to the messages of "True Companion" as a single song here, but also the philosophy and perspectives and, yes, even the voices of the 21st century songwriter and the 19th century novelist are sympatico when considering a larger body of his work.

Most of Cohn's songs feature a "Christian" theme or have a notation to God in some way, his songs also seem to have a deeper meaning than they present. He uses allusions, similes, and metaphors in his lyrics. His voice is rich and relaxing to listen to (especially combined with his lyrics). The background music is rather simple as well, maybe a few instruments compared to more modern music which has lots of complex beats. Not all of his songs relate to a theme of love which I enjoy because after a while, love songs can be boring. His song also seem to relate to his past, in Silver Thunderbird he talks about driving the Thunderbird with his dad and how it makes him feel. Even after listening to all the news songs I still like True Companion the most, I enjoy the lyrics and soft piano in the background. His voice goes extremely well with the words and what they mean. It also paints the best picture in my mind and creates a beautiful story (maybe it's because of the comparisons compared to Jane and Mr. Rochester.)

DeleteWhile listening to Marc Cohns songs, I noticed they were all really relaxing and smooth temp wise along with the lyrics. He has a smooth and almost rustic vibrating voice which adds to that effect to the listener. All of the songs he has a deeper message and meaning compared to many meaningless and vulgure songs of our day. He focuses specifically on love,God,and his past experiences in life. His songs sound very hopeful and makes me reflect on my life and how I look at specific situations I encounter. Lastly my favorite song was 'Man of the World' because the tempo of the music varied throughout the song and the chorus was really catchy and beautiful to me. It was so beautiful to listen to!

DeleteMy absolute favorite was "Walking in Memphis" because I loved the way that Marc told a story in the song. While listening to his songs, I noticed how smooth his music is, yet his voice sounded really husky and emotional. It was very romantic and reminded me of other love songs and ballads sung by men that I had heard before. I loved the way that he told stories in his songs- they don't follow the conventional plot diagram, but they are stories nonetheless. Stories in moments, like in the description of the pouring rain in Memphis as he walks down the street, conveys so much implied emotional intensity as he uses words and the way he sings to bring the listener to that moment. I noticed that the themes also seemed very romantic, but not always in a love-y dove-y sort of way. There is some romantic quality in self reflection and bringing oneself back to moments in memory and I found that most of his songs connected to this. There is a bit of a Christian undertone to his songs and his tone is very sweet and genuine. This is the kind of music you can listen to around your momma!

Out of the 5 songs my favorite has to be "Walking in Memphis" because it sounds like he is describing an adventure and the way the song is sung gives is very upbeat and fun in a calming way. Sometimes fun can be crazy almost daring but the fun in this kind of relaxing. Marc Cohn seems to have a story in each song, sometimes it seems personal while other times it can relate to everyone. "Silver Thunderbird" is an example of a story being told. It is very different from today's music which for the most part is vert superficial and hardly connects to something bigger or emotional. Another thing that I noticed was song length, some of his songs are fairly long about 4 minutes while others are much shorter about 2 min. However, he still manages to get a clear message across as to why he singing that song. He has a voice that could make anything he says seem emotional, I'm not sure how to describe it but the song lyrics and his voice fit very well together. Also the way he describes love in his songs is very different from today, he shows the importance of it and the impact it has when you find someone you truly love.
ReplyDeleteAfter listening to the 5 songs, I would have to say that 'True Companion' is my favorite out of the majority of the selected songs. I like this song mainly due to it having the same type of theme, when compared to Jane Eyre, a book I truly enjoyed reading.In every single one of Marc Cohn's songs there seems to be a narrative, a message or story he is trying to influence the listener into believing. In the song that I previously listed, the story is how a man believes he has found his true companion, a person he wants to live the rest of his life with. His songs are also very thorough and never fail to exemplify Marc's thoughts and beliefs upon certain topics.
ReplyDeleteI am SO thrilled to hear you say that you enjoyed reading Jane Eyre. It was a favorite of mine when I was in HS, too! I love all of his songs, but "True Companion" is also a favorite. I am so refreshed by the reverence he gives the woman he loves. He loves WHO she is. So many songs today talk about WHAT or HOW someone is like. Also, it was played at my best friend's wedding. :)
DeleteThroughout all 5 songs, I notice that Marc Cohan likes to tell a story with his music. For example, my favorite one, True Companion tells the story of him in love with a girl. His tone in the song tells a very strong story with a feeling of perseverance, as he chases the girl he deems his true companion. I think that his voice is very well suited for this type of music, as he already sounds like someone who could tell stories very well. I think that his songs are very deep once you look into the lyrics of them, and that he puts a lot of intent in his works.

DeleteCohn’s mother died when he was only 2 years old, and his father died when he was just 12. In his music, this is very apparent. He often reminisces about his childhood and his past. The overall topics present in his music are finding happiness, finding true love, and letting go. In Silver Thunderbird, he talks about his dad’s love for the car and the amazing experiences shared with it. His includes a lot of religious allusions and mentions god and angels, signifying he turned to religion to cope with his losses. Walking in Memphis tells the story of Cohn’s adventures in Memphis, where the city acts as a therapy for Cohn. Speaking with an older lady, he is able to realize the need to let go of his parents death and be happy by enjoying life to the fullest. The positive environment Memphis provides further promotes this idea. However, my favorite song is True Companion. This is one of Marc Cohn’s more happier songs where he is finally able to embrace true happiness. It almost seems that the lessons that he has learned throughout the previous songs has enabled him to get to his present happiness. He embraces true love and is not strayed away from the damages it has caused in his life in the past.

DeleteThe first song, Walking in Memphis was first somber because of the black and white setting but then by the end the beat was faster and I feel like it in a way turned happier. Then with Silver Thunderbird the colors are still diluted in a way and I also found that piano is a big part in all of his songs. Going back to the somber tone in Man of the World I liked it a lot because of the message and the underling tone of the song. I had the same feeling about One Safe Place. And then back to the original with True Companion it follows the same as the rest of the songs. They all have this soft tone with mainly the guitar and piano. Personally my favorite was Walking in Memphis.
ReplyDeleteThe way that Marc Cohn uses his b=voice gives the song a raspy sort of country feel. All of the songs we listened to were very slow and relaxing. They had genuine meaning behind them which makes me really like Cohn. All of his songs talk about meaning behind something rather than physical traits (especially true companion). He seemed to at least mention aspects about Christianity in all of his songs. I also liked how they were all very simple and they had simple-ish ideas behind the lyrics, but there was something complex about the way the songs were written that made it unlike a lot of modern music. My favorite song of his was true companion because it is so heartfelt and genuine and it just flows very nicely. I especially like this one because it is the one we listened to in class and analyzed. I think the meaning behind this song is so powerful and loving which is very rare to hear in a lot of songs nowadays.
ReplyDeleteThroughout these songs by Marc Cohan I noticed he is very descriptive by using figurative language and many other devices to show his point. Each of these have a point to them and can be related to. Personally, I like True Companion the most because while reading Jane Eyre it relates most to Jane trying to find her true love and once I heard this song my mind instantly thought of Jane and her journey. Cohn's songs are more relaxing and all seem to be very similar in that sense. He is very good at getting his point out so others can relate. Many people misinterpret what love is and some are so new to it they make their own and I think this song does prove this. Following along with his songs, I could almost connect every line to either something I have read or heard about. This is because his songs are very deep and have true meaning.
ReplyDeleteMarc Cohn's voice is a raspy and deep baritone/tenor that is very nice and also reminds me of Randy Newman. His style also reminds me of Journey and Rent. Marc Cohn really loves his piano, which puts a nice twist on his country style of songs. He has a lot of classic southern country themes in his songs. Has some religious ties, focuses on relationships and families, relatable human experiences, and also there's just an overall vibe that his songs would be played on a road trip or like around a campfire with everyone playing the instruments (not sure how the piano would make it into that setting but I'm not here to discuss the technicalities of hypothetical situations that his songs remind me of). I love the piano in "Silver Thunderbird" and he reminds me so much of Randy Newman in "One Safe Place", but I think that my favorite song of his is "Man of the World". I really like his vocals in the song and also the vibe of it.

ReplyDeleteIt is very evident to me that Marc Cohn is a storyteller. He reminds his audience of simpler times, which, I believe is what makes his music so profound. For example, in "Silver Thunderbird" Cohn recalls fond memories of his dad from when he was younger. While the audience may not be able to relate to the silver Thunderbird, by listening to the song they are flooded with memories from their childhood, or a father figure they had in their life. Cohn also touches on his personal values and beliefs throughout his works. We see this in songs like "True Companion" in which, he lists the qualities or values of someone that he loves (other than looks). My personal favorite song is "One Safe Place". I love the message behind it because it reminds me that everyone is fighting their own battles and looking for a 'safe place'.
It seems to me the Marc Cohn finds the significance in small things. Such as, cars, rain, walking and many other things that make him feel like he has a bigger purpose in such a big world. He writes songs that are very personal but can also be used to relate to other people such as the nostalgia of memories with love ones or items that evoke said nostalgia. I feel that his songs are very reminiscent and that is represented through his raspy voice and word choice that gives his songs a desolate tone. All of Marc Cohn's song titles either involve someone or something such as him literally. “Walking in Memphis”, taking his actions, and giving them a greater meaning, like him reflecting to himself. “Silver Thunderbird” being a memory of him with his grandfather driving a that car. Him feeling like a “Man of The World” when he finds true love. And him finding a “Safe Place” within the music he writes. Overall, to me, it feels like I am listening to the things we would write in a diary because of all the personal subjects he includes.
ReplyDeleteOverall Marc Cohn has a unique style of writing songs and voice with really calming instruments and beautifully played ones in the background. I noticed them throughout all of the songs and I really enjoyed them. His voice is special because it is gravelly and soft so it makes a nice contrast and the lyrics all have Christian elements to them as well. "Walking in Memphis" was about a man and his experiences in Memphis. The "Silver Thunderbird" saying that specific car would be the one God would drive and Marc talks about a kid wanting to be like that. The "Man of the World" was about how he would be the man of the world to this girl, but the girl is never described as anything but just a lover. Finally, "One Safe Place" was about this couple wanting to find a safe place together to live out their lives. After listen to all five I still really like "True Lover" the most because I feel like it's the most different from today's music and how women are portrayed. This song only describes how much he will love this girl for who she is and will be there for her always even after death, which is very different from women being seen in a lot of today's pop culture music. I really like Marc Cohn's style and enjoyed listening to all of his songs!
ReplyDeleteFrom what I have noticed, Marc Cohn is very tranquil in the beginning of his songs and likes to build up tension to the chorus through increasing the rhythm and volume of sound of the piece gradually. His actually singing tone reminds me of soulful, country singers. The raspy part of his voice is somewhat relaxing to me because it gives it a more "rustic" and natural voice instead of something that has been auto tuned in order to get out the "imperfections". This natural style really goes along with the seemingly simple stories he tells. While the words he uses are simple, the audience still gets the underlying understanding that he is representing something bigger. After listening to them all, I still really like "True Companion because I really like the idea of equality he is giving in the story. Most songs now a days really objectify the person they are "interested" in (no matter their gender) instead of focusing on who they are as a person. He also does not place any gender roles in this song of what his other half should do and/or be for him. He only wishes that they live in a way that makes them both happy and where they are both happy to equally give to each other.
ReplyDeleteWhat I have noticed after listening to the five songs is that Marc Cohn makes emotional connections in his songs, to things that he has experienced in his life. I think that this makes it easy for a wide variety of people to relate to his songs. I can tell that the style in which he sings is very heart-felt, and the tone he uses is very emotional. One interesting thing I noticed is that he makes references to a lot of specific things in his music, like in Walking in Memphis. He mentions "blue suede shoes", and I like how he alludes to small things like this because it is those small things that I associate with special moments throughout my life. My favorite song of his would probably be Silver Thunderbird, because of the emotional connection he holds with his dad through it; I can relate to watching/hearing my dad leave early at dawn to leave to work when I was younger.
ReplyDeleteIn his songs, Marc Cohn tends to employ his own vocal talent,(which is admittedly a lot) combined with a nice melody usually composed of soft guitar, piano, and other instruments that I would probably have difficulty naming, to sometimes make a story driven song that is as much from his heart as from the experiences of others. Most of his songs give the listener a calm, tranquil feeling that would bode well for the quality of his song. While I normally don't listen to this type of music, as musically sporadic as I am, I would have to rate Walking in Memphis higher than the others. This is probably due to just how I like the melody, having built up until it crashes down somewhere around 2:11. His voice, as like the other songs is pleasing on the ears, and mixes well with the soft tone of the song in general. As said before, while I don’t normally listen to this type of music and my own musical taste is unpredictable at best, I don't think down on any of his songs due to their pleasant nature and calming feeling that accompanies them.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed that in his songs Mark Cohn seems to match his voice with the music. What I mean is that as the song goes on and becomes faster and more upbeat, the same thing happens to his voice. But as the voice slows down his voice seems to slow down and become low. That seems to be his style. While I have noticed other artists doing a similar style, his just seems to work better in my opinion, i'm not sure why. The theme I noticed is that his songs seem to focus on some aspect of love. For example "Walking in Memphis" which seems to focus on a friend type love, as he seems to show in the video that he just wants everyone to get along as friends. "Silver Thunderbird" where he seems to be experiencing familial love, as he seems to have good memories associated with his dad and his car, and in "True Companion" with romantic love. For the other two songs, I noticed that "One Safe Place" said that love was sweet, and "Man of the World" seems to reference romantic love by asking a girl to become his. So overall I believe the tone is love, just depending on the song it is a different type. My favorite is "Walking in Memphis" the song is really well done and upbeat, but that is not why I like it best, why I like it best is because I have heard it on the radio ever since I was really young so it just brings back a few memories, so I like that one best, but it is also because I feel it is catchy.
ReplyDeleteThe things I have noticed about Mark Cohns songs is, I noticed that each verse and bridge is different and they are not very repetitive making it tell more of a story and have a full storyline, as where some songs just tell a story through repetition. I like how all of his songs have a theme of memories or his happy moment. They are all about things he holds close to himself. I love how he has a very soulful sound because it adds the personal emotion to each of his songs. My favorite song out of all of them was "Walking in Memphis" because I love how much emotion he puts into this song especially. His emotion added to each song tells the story even more then the lyrics by themselves. I love all of them though!
ReplyDeleteMark Cohn has a very unique style of singing, but I love it. Each song has its own message and style and it isn't like the music you hear now. You can tell that he is very personal and isn't just making songs, all of these songs mean something to him and its very evident when you listen to it. It reminds me of when you watch a movie and every actor almost adopts the character they are playing and uses their own memories to relate to the character. My favorite song is still "True Companion" because it just makes me so happy and warms my heart and while the other songs were really good, "True Companion" just really stood out to me.
ReplyDeleteWhile listening to these songs, I noticed that his songs feature like a Christian type of worldview especially in True Companion with not only how he talks about valuing women, but not speaking about any flaws she could have or even physically describing her at all. He mentions God a few times as well, and seeing his wife in heaven when they eventually pass. His songs are very emotional which make the songs even more enjoyable because hearing his emotion, makes the listener feel some kind of connection. I think my favorite would be True Companion because I though it was so unique how the listener has no idea what the woman in the song is like other than the fact she has him in love.
ReplyDeleteAfter listening to five of the songs Mark Cohn had written and performed I noticed several trends that are very prominent in his music. First of all I noticed that he is very expressive about his emotions and really lets out his feelings when singing, this is also apparent because of the inflection of his voice and the power that he puts behind it in order to sound authentic. I also have noticed how he is very respectful and loving, for example in the song 'True Companion' he expresses how he wants to take care of this woman and how he truly loves her for her. Lastly, this is slightly off topic but Mark Cohn makes me think of St. John, this is because of the religious subject matter of the song and also just the way he talks, and I also envisioned St. John to be more like Mark Cohn than a robot. Out of all of these songs my favorite one was probably True Companion, this is because I really like the thought of being able to confide in somebody and to feel safe and at peace in the arms of somebody else, because I really don't like being alone.

DeleteAfter listening to Marc Cohn's music, I noticed he speaks about his religion and god. All of Cohn's songs have a meaning with a different story behind it. While one is very upbeat, another is sad but they all have a story about his life whether it is about a girl or talking to his son. When looking at specifically True Companion, it reminds me of the story Jane had gone through with Mr. Rochester. And how in there end, she is his true companion. Out of all of the songs though, I would say that Man of the World was my favorite but I actually like listening to his style of music. Not only is it different but I like songs that have a meaning and can relate to others and their lives. Most of the reason why I liked Man of the World was partly because it was very upbeat and I liked the vocals in it.
ReplyDeleteAfter listening to the songs written by Marc Cohn I noticed that there was a common trend of religion and strong emotions. When describing girls in his song “True Companion” I noticed that he almost never describes them base off of their physical features. I really enjoyed listening to True Companion again because we just finished reading Jane Eyre and it reminded me again of Jane and Rochester’s love story. Each of his songs were unique and all portrayed strong emotions.
ReplyDeleteAfter listening to the song by Mark Cohn, I was able to formulate an idea of his voice, style, and themes present in his music. Mark Cohn's voice is very rich and strong as it can sing a variety of different scales with vibrato as well. I also notice that is voice is soft and relaxing to me. In addition, a reoccurring style that I noticed was the fact that he always starts of the song with either a song melody on the piano or soft strums on the guitar. He later uses the instruments in a louder form to emphasize feelings and emotions he is experiencing. This provides a calming and intriguing song as Cohn is able to use different tones in his songs. I also noticed that a theme that occurs is that through love and devotion we can find happiness. In songs such as "Walking in Memphis" he mentions his love and dedication to God verses how he talks about his happiness through the his true companion, in the song "True Companion". This was my favorite out of all the songs because of the lyrics and the sound of his voice. In this song, I find that Cohn sings with more emotion and as if he has spoken from experience which makes the song more personal to me. I love how the lyrics focus on his true companion and how much he loves her and wanted to pass through life by her side without making any remarks about physical appearances. I think that this song should receive more awareness and people in society at present times need a reminder of the true idea of a true companion.
ReplyDeleteMarc Cohn's songs all have very similar themes within them such as religion and they all revolve primarily around either a specific event in the subjects life or their change over time. I also noticed that he tends to like to tell a story within his songs rather than just singing meaningless rhyming lyrics. This range and strong vocals make his music into a story that transports the listener to wherever he's trying to portray. This seems like a style of music that you don't hear a lot of in todays world of music, so it was refreshing and interesting to get the chance to appricate it. After listening to all the songs I think my favorite would still have to be "True Companion" because I personally just think it was the most interesting because it told the whole story of their lives together and plus the discussion we had in class about it brought up some really interesting analyzes that just listening to the other songs couldn't top. In summary, I think he has a good voice and a unique way of telling the stories he wants through music.
ReplyDeleteIn all of Mark Cohns songs, I noticed they showed his passion for what he was experiencing and feeling, and were all very strong and emotional. The message in his songs are especially emphasized by his voice and the piano. I can feel the strength in the piano and how the minors and majors compliment each other in all of his songs to create such a spirited melody. In all of his songs I recognized that they were very traditional and deep in the sense of love and God, versus how our generations music can be very dissolute. I appreciate the emotion Mark Cohn convey's through his music and my favorite was Walking in Memphis because I enjoyed the rhythm and how powerful it was.
ReplyDeleteMark Cohn definitely has a very harmonic tone in his voice which add a lot of depth and meaning to his music. Throughout his music, he always has a very prominent reference back to God and other influences in his life like his family and loved ones. His constant mention of love, not only to others but also himself, add so much more emotional influences into the music which I feel really centerpieces everything. His style fluctuates between his music, which is evident in "Walking in Memphis" which takes on a whole different vibe and tone into it. His ability to put life experiences and other bits of story into his music adds more meaning into it which makes it so much more interesting to listen to. My favorite of course was "Walking in Memphis" because of the cheerful and energizing vibe to it and also the choir that kick in with the chorus which was pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteMarc Cohn's songs are very similar to each other and they feel like they were written off his past, because he has all of these songs that have the same "slow-fast" tempo. His style of music is different, because when I first heard his song "True Companion" I thought he was a country singer because his voice would sound good for country songs, but I believe he made the right decision being a mix of folk rock, soft rock, and alternative country. The themes in these songs are fondness and affection because his songs all have a main object that he is singing about, and he is using a soft song to go with the object, showing he likes this object and not singing a harsh song throwing shade at the object. My favorite song from this list is "Walking in Memphis" because it is an ubeat type song and the message is cute because he is walking around Memphis running into this girl on accident and he gets a crush on her.
ReplyDeleteMarc Cohn's Voice was very relaxing, deep and gave off a soft rock country vibe. His style seems to be instrumental music with all of his songs including a storyline and an overall message. “Walking in Memphis” seems to have an optimistic tone with a theme of pursuing your dreams. It appears that he’s going to memphis with a dream to sing as he becomes a Christian for a night to perform and notices all of the famous people that originated from there. “Silver Thunderbird” gives off a mysterious unattainable tone. It leads me to believe that something happened to his father when he was young due to the fact that his father left and never returned at the end of the song. Because his father seems to spend more time worrying about his car than spending time with his son, the theme I believe could be that In the end family is and should be more important than worldly possessions. “One Safe Place” seems to set a tone of endurance, waiting for a dream that may never come while still having the hope that it will. My favorite songs ( I couldn't choose one) were “Man of the World” and “My True Companion”. Both for contrasting reasons. I liked “Man of the World” because its lyrics were very deep and could be interpreted in different ways. While I also liked “My True Companion” as I feel like it was the most applicable and straight forward and had less to do with a specific story and more with the universal experiences of finding love and sticking with it through trials.

In each of the five songs he also uses a change of tempo which keeps the listener intrigued and interested in what comes next in the song. Walking in Memphis was my favorite song because it showed Marc Cohn's change of pace and was a upbeat song which caught my attention right from the start.
ReplyDeleteThroughout Marc Cohn's songs he focuses on a central theme and builds upon it telling a story. Marc Cohn's voice is beautiful and his notes gradually grow and decrease in pitch. The primary theme I saw in his song was the necessity and presence of others in his life. The Song I enjoyed the most was Man of the World because it relates to my life and how I want to open myself up to the world and have others to help me. Companionship is what I strive for in life and this is why I connected to this song.
ReplyDeleteMarc Cohn’s music is very full of emotion, communicating the feelings he puts into his music. I love the piano and guitar music accompaniments, and I love Walking in Memphis when the choir joins in with him. Silver Thunderbird felt a lot different than the first song because it had more modern references such as the “Batmobile,” however it still has the same religious theme that is present throughout all of his music. Man of the World is and One Safe Place also have the same topics of religion and love. His music seems to focus on identity and beliefs, which he reflects through his lyrics. My personal favorite was Walking in Memphis because of the changes in dynamics and the emotion when the choir joins in singing with him.
ReplyDeleteCohn's songs are very soulful and almost all of them mention God. Cohn relies on imagery and metaphor to set the tone and the scene of the songs. Like in "One Safe Place", like when he sings "into the arms of understanding". I notice the similarity between this song and "Jane Eyre" because Brontë also uses metaphor to put passion and meaning behind her words. It also makes it easier to visualize. My favorite song is "Silver Thunderbird", because I like songs that are able to plant emotions. I could feel the way he Cohn missed his father and how he thought of him now that he drives his car that his father gave him.
ReplyDeleteCohn's voice with in these five songs is emotional. His voice give off this sense of compassion that allows you to really get the message from the music. The style of his music is christian based from traditional marriage, to church, and from him repeatedly using God and his name in the music. The theme of these songs sounds like it is all relationship based weather it is with you grandson/son and or someone special he is talking usually about someone. My favorite song on the other had would be Silver Thunderbird. The song just has a great story to it and his voice and the way the music sound it just seems so alive and happy.
ReplyDeleteTrue Companion was my favorite of the five songs. It did not seem to fit in with the rest. The other four songs have a more somber tone and focus a lot on Cohn's past. Silver Thunderbird focuses on Cohn's relationship with his father who died when he was twelve. These first four songs also share very soft and quiet instrumentals. True Companion in camparison had a more upbeat tune that focused more on his hopes for the future than his past hardships. I would say most people could relate to this piece specifically because everyone longs for a "true companion" whether that be a friend, significant other, or just someone they can share their life with. Humans are social creatures and we all want someone to talk to and share our experiences with. I also noticed that the majority of his songs incorporate allusions to other singers or to heaven, as well as, metaphors, personification, and hyperboles. In Silver Thunderbird one form of figurative language stuck out to me when he referred to the car holding secrets which is personification as the car is an inanimate object which can not here or keep a secret.
ReplyDeleteIn all of Cohn's songs he had a common tone of being very emotional, and each song seemed to carry a deeper meaning, and almost all of them talk about God. Cohn is very clear in the messages he is trying to convey with each song and he almost paints the picture in the listeners head with his words and music that go along with it. Silver Thunderbird was my favorite song because it was a very different then the rest, it clearly conveyed to the listener how much he had missed his father and it easily shows the listener how he feels.

DeleteFrom Kiyah Bell: Marc Cohn voice has an overall powerful yet tame feel to it, as it is deep yet beautifully calm that makes you want to listen to it repeat. His style reminds me of an old cinematic movie as most of the videos are in this old style and show him in a peaceful area. While it also matches his voice, deep and somehow calm. His songs also hold deeper meaning as most are about some aspect of his life, such as love, relationships and religious aspects. I love the song “True Companion” it made me imagine a perfect wedding day and that everyone can find that perfect love. The music and the lyrics also compliment each other perfectly as they both give off a calm atmosphere.
ReplyDeleteMost of Cohn's mosic or lyrics consist of a religious theme and have a god tone to them all. As well as how the lyrics of all his music have a deeper meaning, when listening to it, I listened to true companion twice because it emphasizes true love and is also known to be one of the most popular wedding songs representing the immense love between the two. The tone of the song true companion sounds to be very depressing but it is about how he is in love with a girl and this song is my favorite because of just simply alone the deeper meaning and how he just conveys a completely different message when reading the lyrics. He puts so muuch thought into his lyrics I assume because of the messages within his music.
ReplyDeleteFrom listening to Cohn's music, I came to a realization that he puts a lot of emotion into his songs. Each of his songs seem to be personal and could have possibly occurred in his life. The lyrics give a deeper insight of what he is feeling and the slowness of the songs lead you to have a certain feeling. The words have a deep meaning to them that are very relate-able if in a tough spot in your life. One of my favorite songs was "Walking in Memphis". There was a line in the beginning of the song that said, "I have a first class ticket but I am as blue as can be" and these words really stood out to me. This gave off the impression that his life could be going fine but deep down, he feels something else. I feel that this is very common today because many people won't have anything going terribly wrong for them but find a reason to still be sad or upset. Another one of my favorites was "True Companion". As we listened to this song in class, it gave me chills at certain parts. The fact that he does not recognize her as her looks but rather her personality and the way she makes him feel shows true love. It is a very compassionate song that really reaches to the heart. I love his music and how every song has its own special feeling and meaning.

Through listening to these five songs you can see that he is telling a distinct story in them as through that you can see that all of his emotions and stories connect to the main source of one person that impacts him. That being Christ, as he devotes and take his songs back to God. Through a spiritual based reasoning there you see the theme as well as that different motivations of influences in his life. His voice is strong that when you hear the words that he says the impact is supposed to keep the listener thinking of the words he said. His song "Silver Thunderbird" is not about the car but more about the father figure and through that it is my favorite because I do connect with this song in some ways making it super understanding when i had listen to it.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Marc Cohn sings with emotion, and is always in touch with his songs, he has a soulful voice and always matches his voice to the emotions of his songs. I like his soft rock style, and that he talks about love, whether it be loving a person or loving a memory or place. Out of all his songs, I liked walking in Memphis because it sounds as if he is lost, and doesn't know himself which is relatable to me and teens alike. We have a future ahead of us, and we don't know what we'll do, much less how we feel in the present.
ReplyDeleteThe tone of each of Marc Cohn's songs are the same as they all hold such emotion and the melody is very similar. His voice matches the tempo of his music as to why he doesn't change the tempo much because it suits him so well. The only difference in each of songs is the deeper message he holds behind tem, what he is trying to show us. His religious views also show to have a great impact on his music as it show much in it. The song I enjoyed listening to the most was "One Safe Place" because of the level of deep of emotion he conveyed in it and the amount of people that could relate and be moved by the lyrics in the song. The message of trying to find a place to rest and looking for a safe place to call home held such a deep meaning and connects to the many people in the world who don't have anywhere to go home to or don't feel safein the place they do.
