THE 25 LOVES OF THE SEASON

It's that time of year again where on the blog we take a moment to reflect on those extraordinary things, places, times and people we love most.

Last year, we made a list of our favorite things--twenty five favorites, to be exact.  This year, we will be a bit more detailed by answering to a specific list of favorites, beginning with those that relate to the holidays (my favorite time of year!)

Think of this post as yet another way to approach the so-called "New Year's Resolutions," which I personally detest because they usually focus on what we want to change about ourselves.  Not that I believe there is anything wrong with change, especially if it leads to true, positive character enhancement, but it is also important in today's often dark world to focus on the things for which we are grateful; those things that are, to our hearts, most beloved.

So....here we go.  Without further ado, it's time to be grateful and enlightened.  Here is the list of questions.  I have supplied you with my personal answers as an example.  You will take the same list and personalize it with your answers for your blog response.  I cannot wait to see all the wonderful items that make your list!

1.  Favorite holiday movie and/or performance:   That's easy.  My favorite movie is Christmas Carol, The Musical, featuring Kelsey Grammar, Jesse Martin, Jane Krakowski and Geraldine Chaplin.  It is followed closely by Miracle on 34th Street, the 1994 version.  My favorite holiday performance has always and will always be The Nutcracker Ballet.

2.  Favorite holiday song/music:  I have always been a fan of old English carols.  A few of the top are God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, What Child is This and Carol of the Bells.  It's not Christmas until these tunes permeate my home.  :)

3.  Favorite holiday tradition:  The Caraway Christmas Eve dinner, a traditional, Old English feast of
prime rib and homemade horseradish, Gwyn's creamiest mashed potatoes, roasted brussel sprouts and trifle for dessert! We start, however, in Paris, always, with French onion soup.

4. Favorite gift you've ever received for Christmas/Chanukah:  My daughter, Gwyneth Hope.  She was born Christmas Day, 2000.

Church Street, Surrey, England
5. Where would you spend your DREAM Christmas/holiday?  Surrey, the English countryside, beautiful scenery only a 40 min train ride from London!

6.  Favorite holiday symbol:  The nativity, followed  by the Christmas tree and real snow!

Moving outside of the holiday realm.....

7.  Favorite thing that you own (object, not person): besides my computer, it would have to be my special Romeo and Juliet wine glasses given to me especially by "Romeo's"  mother and created by his aunt.

8.  Favorite color:  Red.  The end.  Always has been, always will be.  It is the best color for everything.

9.  Favorite flower:  This one is tough because I have a three way tie:  red poppies, white roses, and gardenias.

10.  Favorite inspirational person, living or dead:  Jesus.

Normandy, France
11.  Favorite place in the world:  France.  Followed closely by Kauai.

12.  Favorite friend?  It is a tie between the two women I have known the longest (and they still love me!!).  Sherri Frost and Pauline Maranian.

13.  Favorite Celebrity crush?  As a child, it was Clark Gable.  (I loved Gone with the Wind)  Now, it has to be Adam Levine.

14.  Favorite author/playwright or both:  Easy.  C.S. Lewis and William Shakespeare, respectively.

15.  Favorite non-holiday song:  This changes by the month.  Now, it is Hello, by Adele because of her epic voice.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQHsXMglC9A

The Bentley
19.  Favorite or dream car?  A classic 1940's Bentley, two-toned black and silver with customized red leather interior, complete with personal driver (I hate driving)

20.  Favorite Quote of all time:  This changes.  Right in this moment, it is:  "And now these three things remain: faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love." (1 Cor. 13:13)

Cheeses and wines of France
21.  Favorite Food:  French food.  I love it all. Especially escargot, all of their 400 national cheeses, wine and French onion soup.  The French appreciate REAL butter.  So do I!

22.  Favorite Season:  Winter followed closely by summer

23.  Favorite Era - If you had a time machine, you would travel to....  The 1940s or 20s.

  1. Sorry, this is really long.

    1. Favorite holiday movie and/or performance: I love The First Christmas: The Story of the First Christmas Snow. It’s kind of an obscure one. It’s about a shepherd who gets blinded right before Christmas and taken in by some nuns. The singing and narration is done by Angela Lansbury. And of course my favorite holiday performance was Odyssey’s production of A Christmas Carol. I know that’s a big surprise to anyone reading this.
    2. Favorite holiday song/music: My favorite holiday song to listen to is either “Snoopy’s Christmas vs The Red Baron” or “The March of the Toy Soldiers”. Both are really upbeat, fun songs.
    3. Favorite holiday tradition: Putting up the Nativity every year. It’s been my job since I was ten.
    4. Favorite gift you've ever received for Christmas/Chanukah: My “record your own” doorbell. My friends and I had a fun time making it say “self-destruct activated”, toppling over a stool for the “explosion”, and then hiding me in a closet to see if my parents would go along with the scheme.
    5. Where would you spend your DREAM Christmas/holiday? : Somewhere with snow.
    6. Favorite holiday symbol: The star which led the wise men to toddler Jesus
    7. Favorite thing that you own (object, not person): My knickknacks and china doll which I got from my Great-Grandma Rose who died when I was younger.
    8. Favorite color: I can never choose. I usually say purple or yellow, but my closet is increasingly becoming more filled with gray (no gray shirt jokes please) so that’s what I’m going to have to go with.
    9. Favorite flower: Wisteria
    10. Favorite inspirational person, living or dead: Laura Ingalls Wilder
    11. Favorite place in the world: Georgetown Market Days
    12. Favorite friend: Do I have to pick a favorite? That seems rude.
    13. Favorite Celebrity crush?: None. But when I was little I had a crush on Alton Brown (go figure).
    14. Favorite author/playwright or both: I like Louisa May Alcott for the classics and Shannon Hale for her fantasy. As for playwrights, I don’t think it would be possible for me to pick a favorite.
    15. Favorite non-holiday song: I had a really fun time with “It’s the Hard Knock Life” in Annie, but my favorite song is “This is the Stuff” by Francesca Battistelli or “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen.
    16. Favorite sport to watch and favorite sport to play: Gymnastics to both? I’m not really a sports person, but I can cartwheel.
    17. Favorite pastime: Reading or taking pictures.
    18. Favorite personal style: 50s clothes are my absolute favorite, with the pretty dresses full of bright colors and polka dots, but I just tend to wear whatever fits
    19. Favorite or dream car?- VW Beatle, with a leather top and flower light covers. Too bad they’re designed for tall people to drive.

    25. Favorite non-holiday movie/play: So hard to choose. Star Wars, Princess Bride, The Sound of Music, Into the Woods, The Seven Year Hitch, I could go on for a while.

  2. Cool! It's not rude to pick a favorite friend. To me, it's the friend who has stuck by you for the longest amount of time. Maybe favorite friends happen when you are older?

    1. Portuguese sausage. You eat them like hot-dogs (with or without mustard), or in kale soup traditionally. We also put them in spaghetti sometimes. They are a once a year treat.

    4. Favorite gift you've ever received for Christmas/Chanukah: My uncle gives pretty memorable gifts. One year wrote us a card saying “This guarantees you one family vacation on (whatever cruise line it was). 2) I’m not even going to lie, I’m not a fan of christmas music. I’m not sure why, but even when I was little they just have never been my favorite. I think it’s because they just seem so over played even not during the holidays. Especially ‘All i want for christmas is you’, ‘Santa baby’ and ‘Rockin around the christmas tree’. They are just all so over played. There are a couple I like ‘Drummer boy’ or ‘Baby it’s cold outside’, but I usually won’t listen to christmas music.
    3) The past few years I haven’t really celebrated Christmas, its really been just a regular day for me. One of my favorite traditions from when I was younger was setting up and decorating the tree, although I don’t do that anymore…
    4) Hmmm, I don’t really have a favorite gift. My most memorable gift though was last year when Candra set up a scavenger hunt outside (we both live on ten acres, by the way) with several little gives all over our yard and I had to follow the little clues and riddles attached to find the next gift.
    5) Honestly my dream christmas would be to just spend it with my family. Now that my parents are recently divorced they both work on the holidays and live separately, and I miss the days when we would spend the holidays as a family.
    6) my favorite holiday symbol would be the christmas tree and snow as well, I’ve never actually been to the snow before but Ive always loved the way the snow looks especially when covering a green tree.
    7) This one is hard, My favorite thing I own would have to be my car. I know it’s not really sentimental but it gets me places which is especially important when I live 30 miles away from in town.
    8) my favorite color is pink and blue, but I’m really picky on what shad of pink and blue I like.
    9) my favorite flowers is rainbow roses, I guess they aren’t a “real” flower, they are just white roses they have been dyed. But I still consider them my favorite.
    10) umm, I honestly don’t really have a favorite inspirational person. I look up to many people like my parents and family members.
    11) I haven’t been to many places to really say what is my favorite but I’ve always had a fascination with Paris and Rome and I would love to go one day.
    12) My favorite friend would have to be Candra as most would guess. She’s the biggest pain in my butt but I wouldn’t trade her for the world.
    13) I have a ton of celebrity crushes! Luke Bryan would have to be my favorite though.
    14) My favorite author when I was younger was Michael Grant who wrote the Gone series that I was obsessed with, now I’m not quite sure who my favorite author would be.
    15) I have a TON of favorite songs, and my favorite song honestly changes weekly and depending on my mood. Right now my favorite song(s) would be “I know what you did last summer by Shawn Mendes, Stressed out by Twenty One Pilots and One Call by Charlie Puth.

  11. 16) I think we can all guess my favorite sport to watch would be volleyball. I mostly watch college volleyball though.
    17) My favorite past time would be when we would go on anual family reunions and all my family would meet up in California and we would spend a couple weeks together over summer.
    18) My favorite style would be a vintage, boho hipster look mix. If that makes any sense.
    19) I’m not a car person, and I don’t really have a dream car….
    20) I have tons of favorite quotes. But one of my top 10 would be from How I Met Your Mother (my favorite show ever) “Here’s the thing about mistakes, sometimes even when you know that something’s a mistake, you gotta make it anyway. Even, really dumb mistakes”.
    21) my favorite food is mozzarella sticks and spinach ravioli, I could eat the forever.
    22) Summer, I actually hate the cold. A LOT.
    23) my favorite era would be the 40’s/50’s.
    24) I’m actually not sure what I want to do with my life and I’ve been really trying to figure that out lately. Recently I’ve kind of been thinking about going into Law and becoming a Lawyer.
    25) my favorite movie would have to be “The Proposal” with Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock. I have seen that movies SO MANY times and I can still laugh so hard at it.

I need to add mine as two comments because I had to many words, sorry lol.

    1. Taming of the Shrew is one of the best, and you did see what I believe is the best performance of it, outside of our own in 2013. :) I also enjoyed Christmas Eve service when I was young...we would go to Midnight Mass, and as the choir entered, they would sing "Oh, Come, Oh, Come Emmanuel" acapella. They started in the vestibule. It is still among my favorites, too because the words are SO meaningful! My favorite line is: "Oh, Come Oh Come Emmanuel and ransom captive Israel." Moves my heart. :)

    1. Excellent! May I recommend you professor at Exeter College at Oxford? (C.S. Lewis did!) Also....learn French. Start now and continue in college, then study abroad in Paris and spend at least a year there- be sure to tour France and see Normandy. It's my favorite. Paris (and France) is ALWAYS a good idea. I spent almost a month there on my honeymoon, and we really saw many parts of France. INCREDIBLE and beautiful. Nowhere like it on earth. :) And the food is to die for.

    1. The Judge is a very good song....lyrics are so interesting and can be interpreted in so many different ways, depending on the listener. The time periods you chose...wow, very diverse! :) Although they all three have rebellion as a big theme. And agree on inspirational person. There is no figure like him in history, and there never will be again.

    1. C.S. Lewis! *sigh* Love Narnia. You know, I have always imagined that when I die, I will wake up in the wardrobe room. It will be raining, and I will run to the wardrobe doors, fling them open, and Heaven will be like Narnia....a place where you can have all four seasons at once, talking animals, and of course, Aslan. :)

Dream Holiday: I would cry if I ever got to go back to Verona, Italy.
    Favorite Holiday Symbol: Gingerbread men!
Favorite Thing I Own: My cat? Though it’s been widely debated by my friends and family whether I own him or he owns me. I also really like my swords.
Favorite Color: Burgundy is nice, but if I’m asked what my favorite color is, I generally say Indigo.
Favorite Flower: I think it’s technically a tree, but the flowers on the wisteria tree are beautiful.
Favorite Inspirational Person: I feel like my answer to this question changes every day, but right now it would have to be Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton.
Favorite Place in the World: In Lee Pace’s arms. Haven’t been there yet, but I’m holding out hope for the future. XD In all seriousness, being on a stage is my favorite place to be, and has been since I was seven. :)
    Favorite Friend: My cat.
Favorite Celebrity Crush: LEE PACE <3
Favorite Author: Um. I have a lot of favorite authors! Right now, it would have to be Neil Gaiman (I just finished re-reading Good Omens), but I’m sure it’ll change in a month or so. Oops. (Also, did you know he's married to our favorite Ted Talk speaker, Amanda Palmer?)
Favorite Non-Holiday Song: Uh. Anything by P!ATD, but right now, much like the rest of the drama kids, I’m obsessing over the Hamilton soundtrack.
Favorite Sport to Watch/Play: I don’t really watch sports, but I do play badminton.
Favorite Passtime: Aside from making kids cry and ignoring my art commissions, I do still really love acting. Going to the movies is pretty fun, too.
Favorite Personal Style: One time my cousin told me I dressed like a slutty yoga teacher. That was pretty great.
    Favorite Car: The Wiener Mobile.
Favorite Quote: Uh, I have a lot of them. The one coming to mind right now is, “It is better to know whether there will be weather, rather than what the weather will be,” by Norton Juster.
Favorite Food: Pizza Rolls. Or my mom’s homemade Mi Goreng. (It’s basically just Indonesian fried noodles.)
Favorite Season: Any season during which bugs aren’t present.
Favorite Era: The Revolutionary War is my favorite era to study, but I wouldn’t really want to be there. I like now, but early 2000s fashion would definitely be a fun thing to experience (for like a week, but then if I had to see it for any longer than that, I would probably cry.)
    Favorite Occupation: Veterinarian. :D
Favorite Non-Holiday Movie: Either Kill Bill or Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Oh, I also really like Coraline.
